Wishing all our friends and supporters a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

David (Faouzi) and Linda Arzouni

Things were not quiet and peaceful “in the time of Herod…” (Luke 1:5). History tells us those were troublesome days. So God sent the Prince of Peace, and His angels spoke of peace on earth for those who believe. May His peace be yours each and every moment of this holiday season!

Linda and I have much to be thankful for as we wrap up the year and look forward to returning to Mali soon.

During our extended furlough I made several trips overseas on different AGWM assignments.  Most recently I shared with Live Dead team leaders from East and West Africa during the Dakar, Senegal, Conference.  We strategized together and set up action plans for greater ministry particularly among our unreached people groups.

Even as jihadists and security concerns dominate the news, we are convinced that God is calling the Church to engage Muslims now more than ever before.  We should not retreat from the challenge that they represent.  I wrote some articles which you can find at www.hesed.com, which address the flood of questions we’ve been getting about Islam and all that our nation is facing.

The self-sufficiency agricultural project in Waramajanna, Mali continues to be a positive venue for daily interaction with and ministry to Muslims.  The project is steady, but we really need to be there for wider outreach, discipleship of MBBs (Muslim Background Believers), as well as the opening of the School of Hope, and more effective community development.

On the home front we rejoice in what the Lord is doing with our family: our son’s family is serving in Northern Asia; our daughter’s family is active in their local church and works with an agency in the fight against human trafficking. Linda is teaching an Adult SS class at Christian Life Center, Santa Cruz, CA, and cares for her 95 years old father.

Presently, I am trying to finish writing a Bible School course manual for pastoral care in Muslim contexts.  God willing, I will speak for several days at a pastors’ conference in France in mid-January, and then head back to Mali by mid-February for our regular term of service.

Thank you for sending us back!

David (Faouzi) and Linda Arzouni

Dear Friends,

We are still on an extended furlough to finish an AGWM-mandated writing assignment to produce training materials for workers reaching out to the Muslim world.  This has taken me (David) often to Springfield, MO.  Additionally, I made two trips to Mali to ensure continuity of our projects among the Malinkés, an unreached people group in the southwestern part of the country.

During those trips (with the help of friends from California and Illinois) we were able to set up important equipment at the self-sufficiency project in Waramajanna, which is essentially a ministry venue where we interact daily with Muslims.

Fields at Waramajanna
Fields at Waramajanna

Also, we just finished the first building (three classrooms) at the School of Hope.  Most importantly, key contacts were renewed, daily sharing of the Gospel took place, and Muslims came to Christ.  During a ministry visit to the eastern part of Mali, the Lord protected me from potential trouble when terrorists unexpectedly showed up there, and I had to drive all night into the bush to get away.  Thank you for your prayers!

We are ever grateful to you for standing with us in this ministry!

Three Young Men

He grew up in a Wahabi Muslim family – a fundamentalist denomination within Islam. He reads and writes Arabic and was preparing to become an imam. Because you sent us to Mali to share the Gospel, we had the privilege of bringing him to Christ. The Lord is using Faysal in the supervision of our project in Waramajanna, including the building of a Christian school there.

The top right photo is that of a young man who converted to Islam at a young age. He had friends among extremists in Somalia. Muslims who attended madrasas since childhood helped radicalize him while living in Prescott, AZ. Sadly, Elton was just killed in Garland, TX while committing a terrorist act.

David and Jibril
David [Faouzi] with little Jibril and his walaha or wooden tablet
The photo at top left is that of a child attending a madrasa right now. What will he turn out to be?

Unless we reach Jibril with the Gospel, he will – at best – grow up with a complete misunderstanding of what Christians are all about and a strong resistance to the message of Christ. But more tragically, little Jibril could become radicalized in a country like Mali where Al-Qaeda-sponsored groups are still making trouble. We want to reach him and others like him. Thank you for making it possible with the SCHOOL OF HOPE in Waramajanna, Mali.

Christian schools have been the most effective evangelistic tool in reaching Muslim children – and then their families – in all of West Africa! We are so grateful for your prayers and gifts. Our special thanks to the Northern CA-NV Women’s Ministries for their generosity!

Dearest Friends, Family, and Co-laborers in the harvest fields of Mali, West Africa,

David (Faouzi) and I are always eager to greet you, to hug your necks and heartily shake your hands — figuratively-speaking — and to thank you for your unfailing commitment to God’s rescue plan, and to us, as we work in Mali, West Africa!  We are so GRATEFUL for your friendship!

Many of you know that I, Linda, have been home with my father (Reino Tilus) since my mom (Bonnie) passed away.  AGWM has very kindly worked with us, letting me care for Dad while David went back and forth.

Then we had an absolutely thrilling year of furlough, reporting to our churches, visiting most of our old friends, and making a lot of new ones.  I was particularly blessed by the warm enthusiastic reception I received in all my assigned WM Sectional Celebrations — you help me feel “not alone”!

District Council was another high point this year, with us feeling pretty speechless as the WM Director, Debbie Heden, handed us a check for $25,000 to furnish the School of Hope in Waramajanna, Mali.  On behalf of the children who will walk into those (your) school doors, sit at your desks, study the three R’s on your blackboards, and, best of all, hear about the love of Christ, WE THANK YOU!  On behalf of those children who will embrace our Lord Jesus Christ inside those 4 walls, and then bravely take Him home to meet their parents, WE GLORIFY THE LORD WITH YOU!

The School of Hope in Waramajanna, Mali
The School of Hope in Waramajanna, Mali

We have been granted an extension in the States so that David can finish his doctoral studies, (yes, he took the “scenic route”), and write a manual (Pastoral Care in the Muslim Context) that will be made available in all our Bible schools.

We trust we’ll be able to return to our full-time ministry to unreached people groups in Mali the end of this year.

Deut. 16:15: For the LORD your God will bless you in all your harvest and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.

Yours for the harvest,

David (Faouzi) and Linda Arzouni

This is a huge and beautiful gathering of Egyptian believers praising our Lord. It is wonderful to hear Arabic used to express Christ’s love instead of the Islamic rants of ISIS and other terrorists. These Christians are singing, “Let us go in [the name of] the Crucified.” This video is also a reminder that there is a potential army of culturally and linguistically fit workers to take the Gospel to every Muslim community. Let’s pray that these Christians will refuse to be further intimidated by Islam. Let us pray that they will set aside the fear (or worse, the apathy) and “go in the name of the Crucified” to fill the Middle East with Christ’s love.

Here are some of the common subjects for prayer that are included on these websites:

1. Although there are now about 40 missions agencies in the country, breakthrough has not yet been seen. Pray that many Malians will come to Christ.

2. Pray for Malian ministries to collaborate with foreign missions.

3. Pray for more workers to become involved in urban church planting.

4. Pray for protection from terrorism.

5. Pray for God to protect and heal innocent children who often become sick because of common nomadic practices (vaccinations are missed). In addition, pray that Malian Christians would reach out to the sick, especially those with AIDS and malaria.

6. Pray for greater prosperity – that families will find enough food to survive. Pray for malnourishment in children.

7. Pray for displaced families – that God would guide them to places of safety and rest. Pray for children whose education is suffering because they have to flee their homes.

9. Pray for Malian Christian students to have discernment in relating to their friends and classmates.

Here are some highlights from our current furlough:

  • You have prayed and the Lord has answered:  When we started this current furlough in September of 2013, we were faced with the daunting task of raising about 15% more funds than what was budgeted for our last term (2008 to 2013).  In spite of the struggling USA economy, we are now close to reaching our assigned amount to be raised in monthly commitments.  We believe this will enable us to return to Mali by the end of June 2014.
  • After wonderful times of ministry in various Missions conventions, the following churches have provided significant funds or equipment for the self-sufficiency agricultural project and/or the School of Hope in Waramajanna:
    • New Hope Community Church, Gilroy, CA
    • Calvary Church, Lemont, IL
    • New Life Church, Yorkville, IL
    • North Haven Church, Raleigh, NC
    • Calvary Church, Naperville, IL
    • Christian Chapel, Virginia Beach, VA

Thank you for your continued support and prayers!
